The halflings of House Osterbaas are an oddity among the Great Houses. Where the average Rasennan thinks of halflings as a humble, discreet people that live quietly and unobtrusively among humans, the Osterbaas are a flamboyant, eccentric family of great wealth. They made their fortune in the trade of exotic foodstuffs, and have insinuated themselves into the goodwill of their fellow Houses by way of lavish parties and gustatory presents. In some ways, they’re almost a parody of Great House culture; certainly these well-fed, extravagant plutocrats don’t seem to have much in common with the lean, quiet halflings that occupy the lower strata of Rasennan society. The Osterbaas reputation is something of a joke among other Great Houses, but these nouveau riche halflings are so harmless and eager to please that it’s considered gauche to laugh at them.
The Osterbaas pin depicts a rooster atop a gauntlet, a badge that has earned them some discreet ridicule behind their backs (“their idea of falconry, no doubt” being the typical jibe). Their colors are orange and purple.
