A large scowling man with a face full of scars.
Rugo Cuscala grew up in and around one battlefield or another. His father, Peitoro Cuscala, a mercenary in the Amber Hounds was able to secure an actual squire-ship for Rugo after saving the life of Ser Rathos Malumna in the Four Rivers Battle against the Thistle Grin goblin horde. Rathos was the first in the series of unfortunately short-lived tutors for Rugo. Ser Chuan, Ser Nannis, Ser Gorth and Ser Wanansto all fell in battle after bequeathing a few months of knowledge onto the young squire.
Rugo was finally knighted under Ser Karreganth in the last days of the Amber Hounds just before the company disbanded. In the twenty-six years since the displaced foreign knights had formed the company too few of the original members remained or were in condition enough to continue campaigning. So, they sought out their retirements across Racina.
Rugo, for his part, had caught the eye of Elisibetha Rovino and they were wed. Rugo spent two happy years in house Rovino. He stayed away from the politics and mostly trained the house guards and was happy to test out and sell their weapons into other mercenary hands. However, when Elisibetha died, so did Rugo’s desire to be in the family. ‘Betha’s father, always a shrewd negotiator, did not want to lose the connections that Rugo had built up with the various mercenary guilds. He offered another daughter, Chelesy (Rugo always thought her “creepy”), to make Rugo stay. When Rugo refused, Chelesy’s hot headed brother, attacked him. During the duel Rugo cut off the brother’s hand and was able to make his escape in the process.
Rugo left town quickly by way of a Pulsciri merchant vessel. Rugo spent the next few years as a mercenary marine. He’s fought pirates, ghouls, fata, nithians, and other beasts on his wide travels.
Rugo is one of the few survivors of the Pulsciri owned, Wind Kiss, a merchant ship attacked by pirates. He was taken prisoner, escaped and made it back to Quincedia. This same pirate band is rumored to have sacked a series of Avicca craft. Since his return, the Pulsciri and Avicca have each tried to persuade him to reveal the location of the pirate island and exactly what he saw.
Recently, Ser Karreganth, one of Rugo’s favorite instructors was poisoned by an apple. This incident has pushed Rugo out into the local politics a little more in order to find out the source of the apples and why someone would go after his former mentor.
