The Salvina Asylum
Salvina Villa, or as it is less widely known, the Salvina Asylum, is a sprawling manor set in a quiet, shaded dell in the Maviolan forest not far from Ladona. Most of the neighboring settlements know it as some form of country retreat or hospital, where the occasional carriage brings out a new resident for a discreet stay. The truth is that Salvina Villa is one of the rare institutions dedicated to treating those afflicted by some form of curse. Not the simple, almost everyday maledictions pronounced by angered Maviolans, or even the relatively well-known magical afflictions such as mystical diseases or lycanthropy: the Salvina residents labor under curses of great and singular power. Some of these ailments are of fey origin, others infernal, still others even (reputedly) divine. Some are of origins unknown to their bearers.
The Salvina family who once occupied the villa is mostly gone now. The residents are those patients whose burdens make them unable to function to society — or a risk to others — and the staff dedicated to curing their curses, or at least seeing to the needs of those who cannot be cured. Maviolan superstition being what it is, they are left well alone by those who suspect the true nature of the establishment.
The current director of Salvina Villa is Doctor Halivari, one of the leading fabulists in the nation. Halivari has published many works in the field, some of which are surely informed by his experiences with the more remarkable curses laid on those in his care.
