To the east and northeast of Rasenna lie the Widdermarches, a section of goblin country bounded by elven realms and the Lizard Kingdoms to its north and east. The land has no central authority, instead being infested by a variety of squabbling clans and a few teratocratic city-states.
Historically, the Widdermarches have been rallied together under a central banner from time to time. At that point, the realm adopts the name of its new kingdom and goes to war (usually at times when internal feuds have been infrequent enough that the population has risen). So far, none of these would-be goblin empires have lasted. The central figure dies, and the hosts inevitably collapse on themselves.
While the Widdermarches pose a constant if low-level threat, their neighbors have never conquered the land. Goblins have a knack for guerrilla warfare, and at least half of their fortifications and lairs are burrowed out beneath the surface. Instead, the borders are kept generally secure by constant raiding on both sides. Few Rasennan mercenary companies favor Widdermarches work: goblins don’t have much attractive plunder, and much of the wealth of the area is concentrated in the city-states that are entirely too difficult to crack. But even if the work isn’t highly lucrative, it certainly boasts a steady demand.
